Teacher Accused of Having Sex With Student; Angers

Virginia Ann Homberg, 45-year-old teacher at Garden City High School, has been accused of engaging in sex with a male student and sending him sexually explicit pictures.

Homberg has been charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct first degree, both punishable by up to life in prison, two counts of criminal sexual conduct third degree, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and one count of disseminating sexually explicit material to a minor, punishable by up to two years in prison.

According to Wayne County Prosecutor Homberg and her victim engaged in sex from December 2007, when the student was 14 years old, through February 2010. Victim was 14 years old and in the 8th grade when prosecutors say the first offense occured inside the boy's home. It is alleged subsequent offenses took place at Garden City High School.

During the hearing the student testified that he was 14 years of age when the conduct began and 16 years of age at the time of the last contact. In the first instance, he said that his teacher came to his home and asked to use the bathroom when no one was home. She ended up in his bedroom where she took off all of her clothes and his underwear, the teen testified.

“It was strange, it was weird,” he said.

Homberg's $50,000 dollar bond was revoked after prosecutors presented evidence of contact by text message with another student at Garden City High School.
A condition of bond required Homberg to have no contact with minors except for her own children.

The only other witness called by the prosecutor was Angela Reed, a former student of Homberg, who graduated in 2004. She testified that she developed a friendship with Homberg and visited her at school to keep in touch. She said that she became increasingly “disgusted” when Homberg told her that she had developed “feelings” for a student and had sexual relations with the male student whom Reed didn't know.

“I had looked up to her,” Reed said. “She was my best friend.”

Reed testified that Homberg told her that she had sexual intercourse with the male student in the basement of his home.

According to school officials who did not testify, Homberg resigned from her teaching position on March 8. The district became aware of the situation on March 8 at which time Homberg was put on administrative leave.
