Los gatos teacher gets prison

Colette Phelps, a 28-year-old former San Jose middle school teacher from Los Gatos, California, who pleaded no contest to molesting a teen student has been sentenced to five months in county jail as part of a court-offered settlement.

On 6/1/2011, at approximately 10:00 AM, the San Jose Police Department, Child Exploitation Detail, received a report that Colette Phelps, a 28-year-old teacher at Stratford School in San Jose, committed lewd acts with a juvenile Stratford School student. On 6/1/2011, at approximately 6:00 PM, Phelps was arrested without incident as a result of the investigation and booked into Santa Clara County Jail on child sexual abuse charges.

Phelps, who was facing a maximum sentence of more than four years in prison, must also register as a sex offender. She turned herself in and began spending time behind bars before her sentencing date as "a way to show the court how seriously she took this matter," her attorney, Steve Clark said.

According to authorities, Phelps, who worked for five years as a middle school teacher at the private Stratford School in San Jose, sexually abused a 14- or 15-year-old boy. She was fired after her arrest, according to school officials.
