Six-month-old baby girl abused by homeless woman, gets venereal disease

Ashley Stapert, 21-year-old homeless woman from Muncie, Indiana, has admitted to fondling and performing a sex act on a six-month-old baby girl who now has a venereal disease.

Stapert faces charges of felony child molestation and felony criminal deviate conduct. Court documents reveal Stapert was arrested last week after police found her at the Muncie Mission, a homeless shelter in the Delaware County city. The infant victim’s mother, ex-classmate of Stapert, went to police after a medical exam at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health revealed the child had genital warts. The mother told police she had two homeless people live with her and babysit the girl from September to November. She later learned that one of the homeless people — Stapert — molested her daughter, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Stapert and her boyfriend allegedly boasted about their sex crimes to acquaintances they shared with the mother. Those people responded, police said, by physically attacking Stapert and the man, then notifying both the victim's mother and police. Stapert and her boyfriend reported to police on Nov. 10 they had been beaten by two male acquaintances in the 1700 block of South Jefferson Street. The couple did not specify what had prompted the attack.
