Oklahoma teacher arrested on second-degree rape charges

Wendy L. Hickman, 40-year-old English teacher at Bethel High School in Bethel, Oklahoma, was arrested in mid August 2012 on second-degree rape charges alleging that she had sex with a 16-year-old student.

The investigation by Pottawatomie County Police began when the mother of the 16-year-old student came into the Sheriff’s Department to report what she described as a sexual assault on her son. The student told police that Hickman had also sent him nude photographs of herself, which investigators and the Bethel Schools Superintendent Jerry M. Johnson confirmed to be her. According to student they only had sex the one time at her mother’s house “around the end of July” this year.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Hickman’s home and found a picture of the suspect on her cell phone showing her with her pants down while fondling herself. That photograph, which also showed her face, was compared with pictures of her on Facebook and Bethel Superintendent Jerry Johnson was shown pictures from the student’s phone and identified Hickman from those.

According to court documents, Hickman was the teen’s English teacher during the 2011-12 school year.

Superintendent Johnson released the following statement to News 9 regarding Hickman’s arrest:

Our school system was notified by Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department that Wendy Hickman, a former employee of Bethel High School was arrested yesterday afternoon and arraigned Thursday afternoon on charges of second degree rape. She was a former freshman English teacher and resigned from that position Tuesday, August 21, 2012.

Hickman made her initial video court appearance from the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center last Thursday, where a $25,000 bond was set on a provision she would have no contact with the teen student upon release. Formal charges have not been filed.

According to jail records, Hickman posted bond late Thursday; she is scheduled for further court action on Sept. 6.
