Bus driver accused of abusing underage girl

Kristin Miks, 32-year-old school bus driver from Woodland, Illinois, has been arrested for sexual assault and abuse of an underage girl.

Miks was charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault and four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to a statement the sheriff's office released today. She has worked as a bus driver for Gurnee-based Woodland Community Consolidated School District 50 for the last five years, according to the statement. The statement added that the girl thought to be the victim is not a student in the district. None of the sexual encounters between adult woman and teen girl happened on the school bus.

Police said the victim was 15 at the time of the alleged abuse. Her mother found messages from Miks referring to sexual encounters with the girl, and called police. Miks, a school bus driver for Woodland Community Consolidated School District 50, was suspended last month when the district was notified of a criminal investigation.

Miks’ bond was set at $150,000 and she is scheduled to appear in Lake County Court on June 12. The two sexual assault charges, both felonies, each carry four- to 15-year prison sentences. The four aggravated sexual abuse charges, also felonies, each carry three- to seven-year sentences.

iks was charged with two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty, according to online court records. She pleaded not guilty to those charges April 11, records show, and a jury trial is scheduled to begin June 10.
